IC Information

Character Name: Senketsu

Character Canon: Original Universe

Character Age: Greater than six months, most likely less than a year, though his mental age is equivalent to that of a human adult.

Character Gender: Genderless; male pronouns

Canon Point: After the events of Episode 13, which aired and simulcasted (sort of) in English via Crunchyroll on January 9, 2013. This is a few weeks longer than the six-week spoiler preventative gap.

Character Canon History: The List of Episodes on Wikipedia are pretty good at explaining canon events. At chosen canon point, Senketsu's memory is limited to what happens in canon, with the only exception of knowing what his creator looked like.

Character Personality: Content warning: allusion to rape

For anyone reading this that is entirely canonblind: Senketsu is Ryuuko’s clothing. Canonly, he can verbally communicate with absolutely no one else besides her. However, through their interactions, his personality is well-defined and it isn’t difficult to imagine how he would get to know others if given the freedom to do so in a panfandom game. With that said...

“Don’t go! Put me on! Put me on, and feed me blood! I do not wish to go back to sleep! Don’t be scared! There’ll be time for surprise after you put me on!

“Fine. I’ll make you wear me by force! That’s better! I’m a perfect fit!”

The first impression we get of Senketsu is not pleasant, and it’s fully intentional from a directoral standpoint. In the confusion, Ryuuko even asks if he’s a molester on top of the whole, you know, talking sailor’s uniform part, and fan reaction rang just about the same chord, commenting on the uncomfortably close allusion to rape. The issue is only compounded by the dramatic reveal of the kind of outfit Senketsu turns out to be--an excessively revealing outfit that Ryuuko is clearly uncomfortable about wearing. The only thing that doesn’t paralyze her with embarrassment is her undying drive to find out the truth behind her father’s murder and the fighting spirit that refuses to back down.

Yet, despite the awful first impression, another side of Senketsu starts to show itself.

“You’re bleeding too much, Ryuuko. [...] At this rate of blood loss, you will lose consciousness in five minutes.”

He says it so calmly that it almost seems like he’s the clothes version of some sort of A.I. or system announcement that has absolutely no emotional investment in the user. With some time--because Senketsu doesn’t make a hobby of talking too frequently--we realize that this is the way he usually expresses himself. In the heat of battle, when confused or unsure of something, it doesn’t matter; Senketsu almost always speaks bluntly and calmly...but not necessarily in a cold, calculating way.

“If she’s consumed by that thing, it’ll rise to a threat greater than the Kiryuuins. That’s why I’m going to terminate it now, before that uniform turns her into a monster.” Tsumugu Kinagase, episode 5.

In the world of KILL la KILL, there are a small handful of people who know of Godrobes and what they’re capable of. They’re something worth fearing, as Tsumugu does with his introduction into the show, and provides exposition that heavily implies that Godrobes, or at least the technology behind them, has directly lead to the death of someone. One of the Kiryuuin butlers tries to stop Satsuki from putting on Junketsu, warning that she might not survive the ordeal. Godrobes are monsters whose natural tendency is to kill people, and Senketsu is not spared from having this assumption made about him.

“Don’t you dare lay a finger on Ryuuko. If you do, I’ll make you pay.”

His relationship with Ryuuko is hardly parasitic, feeding on her blood and giving her power as a mere by-product. Senketsu is wholly invested in Ryuuko, not only for her success in battle but her general welfare. He doesn’t take his intimate bond with her for granted. In her early battles, before she realized how to Synchronize with him, he constantly warned her about her blood loss, and as their bond grew, he even started getting after Ryuuko for her physical fitness...to the point of teasing her about it, a testament to their relationship not between a woman and her clothes, but between close friends. But even that, at times, seems to be an understatement.

As far as Senketsu is concerned, his entire “body” is for whatever Ryuuko finds suitable to do with it. Whether it means using the fiber of his weft as a grapnel or slicing a part of himself off to blind an opponent, Senketsu doesn’t try to stop her or, for that matter, even complain...in the heat of the moment, anyway. When the dust settles and the two of them are allowed to discuss matters privately, he’ll admit to his experiences that he keeps tight-lipped about at the time. These are the moments that we get to see Senketsu’s softer side. Despite knowing full well that no one but Ryuuko can hear him, he keeps his introspective comments and questions until they’re alone.

We don’t get a truly clear picture of just how non-human Senketsu is until it’s lightly implied with his inquiries. Like Ryuuko, Senketsu rolls with the punches without hesitation, but sometimes his curiosity gets the best of him. As mentioned earlier, he might as well be an AI system directly attached to Ryuuko’s vitals, and he can garner plenty of information through her blood chemistry and parasympathetic system--but that doesn’t mean that he understands the human experience; what Ryuuko wants out of certain situations, or why she feels a certain way when something happens. He has an insatiable appetite to know these things, to understand Ryuuko--and by extension, humans in general--better.

Otherwise, Senketsu is an observer. This is one of the many ways that he balances Ryuuko’s nature. Where Ryuuko is quick to act on impulse and rely on power alone, Senketsu is the strategist. He doesn’t sit back and watch Ryuuko fight as she does naturally just to amuse himself--her skill is naturally enough to overcome plenty of obstacles, and if it doesn’t, it still yields plenty of information for Senketsu to devise a plan of action and instruct Ryuuko succinctly. Sometimes--exceptionally illustrated by the Naturals Election--this even gives Senketsu the opportunity to try something new with his almost-shapeshifting ability, providing Ryuuko with a bigger offensive arsenal than just her Sword Shear blade.

Even though they complement each other, their dynamic is hardly balanced. As the story progresses, we watch as their friendship grows stronger, but Senketsu takes a wholly submissive role between the two of them from the start. Despite being able to make rational decisions and have utter control of his own body, he submits to her will--outside of holding his own between their quarrels. It’s not because he thinks that he’s inferior or weak-willed; it’s because he not only accepts but embraces his role as her clothes. Senketsu loathes the idea of having control over Ryuuko. Even when she tells him to be quiet, he instantly zips up.

Character Abilities: Senketsu is a Kamui: a garment made entirely of "Life Fiber", a sentient substance with the power to imbue the wearer with superhuman abilities. While garments only fractionally made of Life Fiber have significant enhancement capabilities, Kamui are on another level entirely, capable of turning a human into a single-person demolition crew that can level an entire city in minutes.

That is, if the wearer's body is capable of handling the kind of demand a Kamui puts on one's body in order to draw out that kind of power. There are very few people that have that ability, even in canon.

But that doesn't mean he has to. Senketsu is quite content to stay in his standard, inactive state of being a midriff-baring seifuku while being worn, or his mobile autonomous form when on his own. He requires a diet of blood in order to stay active, regardless of what form he spends time in, which he absorbs either through his fibers or through the needle in Seki Tekko (the Crimson Glove). Without blood, he "falls asleep" and remains inactive until fed again, but be warned--hunger puts Senketsu into an illogical, manic state where he will force himself on someone in the desperate need to feed.

He doesn't want to do that, though, so he keeps his appetite in check in any way he can.

In addition to his canon abilities, Senketsu would also be gaining the ability to speak to other people that aren't Ryuuko. The language barrier would make CR harder than it has to be.

Character Inventory: …Senketsu is clothes. He is his inventory. (In other words: he has only his different pieces.)

Interaction Sample: A bakerstreet post here! Threads with Sanageyama (ironbuttmonkey) and Inumuta (databoner) contain spoiler material.

Third Person Sample: Blood bags. No questions asked, no sideways glances, no judgmental eyebrow quirks--they just give it to him when asked…but that's not the reason why he hesitates.

Senketsu is silent and motionless as he holds the full plastic bag in front of him.

Type O. Rh negative.
Collection date.
Volunteer Donor.
WHOLE BLOOD.
A bunch of other information he doesn't recognize.

Even with the label, it still feels…wrong, somehow. As if what he holds between his cuffs isn't actually blood, but some dyed substance that wouldn't do him any good, though he's absolutely sure that the nice people at the clinic had no motive to pull a prank like that on him. Senketsu can't even smell it through the airtight packaging, even though he knows that's for the best. It hardly works up an appetite.

But this is something someone voluntarily donated for the sake of others, be it human or creature, without asking for anything in return. A true act of selflessness. If he thinks of the anonymous face behind the charity, the whole thing seems a lot less uncomfortable for him. Someone with a warm body and a friendly smile. Someone that wouldn't turn their back on him for being living clothes. There's a lot of people around here like that, isn't there…?

He lays the bag down so he can pull out the sterile needle from its compartment at the bottom of the bag. It's meant for intravenous use for those who actually have veins, but for him, it's just a sharp implement. Senketsu ties his sleeve around the shaft and holds the bag over his head with the other. One swift stab later, the dark red liquid falls on his scarf and lapels in fat droplets and runs down his needle-weilding sleeve, disappearing just as fast as they fall, instantly wicked into his fiber.

It's cold. Not like water out of the tap or ice, but it's colder than it would be than if it came straight out of someone's vein, thus it runs thicker than it should. On top of that, he can taste the presence of the preservative and in a split second Senketsu realizes the blood will probably be harder for him to process because of that. The friendly smile in his imagination fades under the unusual taste and texture, but that doesn't matter--it got him this far, and that's all he needed it for.

As the bag drains itself empty, Senketsu finds himself "full" but hardly satisfied. It'll have to do for now; it's yet to be determined if he could satiate himself at all without Ryuuko around.
